I have worked for Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) since its inception in 1996 and have held the role of SEPA’s Data Protection Officer since 2002. I was also SEPA’s specialist lead for Information Governance activities until 2018, in my post as manager of the Information Governance team.
Since 2018, I have concentrated full-time on data protection matters. In June 2020 I was formally appointed to the newly created full-time post of SEPA’s Data Protection Officer.
During my career with SEPA, I have also been involved in the implementation of successive compliance regimes relating to Information Governance, including access to information legislation (EIRs and FOISA) and Records Management.
I see the role of the Data Protection Officer as being both an inward and outward facing role, which ensures that the needs and requirements of customers and regulators are met, while delivering advice and support for colleagues.
UK Data Protection Index Panel
The UK Data Protection Index was launched by the Data Protection World Forum and The DPO Centre at the end of July, and is based on an anonymised survey of a panel of UK data protection and privacy professionals. The survey runs every quarter and overtime will build a unique picture of the profession and its views. This panel will be discussing the results of the latest index survey, covering a diverse range of subjects including professional development, Brexit and the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
